Imagine having an octopus giving you a massage!
You may have seen friends with red round spots on their back and shoulders. In horror, you asked, “What happened to you?”
It was cupping!
How does cupping work?
Where massage works by pushing things around, cupping pulls things to the surface.
This helps loosen the fascia; connective tissue that surrounds everything and gets stuck when you don’t move enough.
Your therapist puts special cups on your skin for a few minutes to create suction. They create this suction, because a flaming cotton ball was first put inside the cup and taken out immediately to create warm air inside the cup.
The cup is quickly placed on your skin, and it creates that suction.
When is cupping used instead of massage?
People get cupping for many purposes, including to help with pain, inflammation, and blood flow.
Cupping has been described as a form of deep tissue massage, but it is much gentler, and you are usually not sore afterward. (Though you may have round red marks for a few days where the cups were.)
Cupping is something everyone must try at least once!

“Prior to my session with Dana, I knew little about cupping other than it leaves markings on the body reminiscent of having been attacked by an octopus. I must say however, the experience was quite the opposite!
Dana is marvelous at using the cups almost like an extension of her hands and placing them in areas where she feels they will provide the most benefit, she can even adjust the amount of suction similar to the changing of pressure during a massage. I was amazed by her seamless skill between hands-on bodywork and the incorporation of the cups. The suction from the cups felt slightly warming, light and powerful. It felt like a graceful bodywork dance but who knows, I couldn’t see anything, so it could have actually been octopus the whole time!
After the session, I felt lighter, softer, and ready for a nap. The following day, I felt more balanced and energetic in my overall being. I highly recommend her cupping work!”
